Platfroms and the people behind them

What I've learned this week about algorithms, privacy and comfort content

It felt like not much happened this week but looking at my actual watch history made me rethink this. Maybe it just felt that way because I was heads down in admin work this week to pull the final strings for the Orbit YouTube Launch. Over the next few days we’ll reveal bits of whats to come with the official launch on September 25th.

How privacy laws affect platforms

Rumor has it that Meta considers releasing a separate version of Instagram in Europe that allows user to pay for an advertising free experience. Not because the users want it but because of increased privacy concerns and to mitigate scrutiny due to GDPR compliance. Those concerns might also be why Threads isn’t available in this region. Talking about privacy concerns Tiktok is opening up the first of three data centers in Europe, that will house user data from across the European Economic Area (EEA), the U.K., and Switzerland. This action is also an attempt to combat long-held privacy concerns over its links to China.

Do you think that is overall a good development or are regulations hampering innovation?

How do you become the algorithm?

On this episode of NDA, Dave Whiskus CEO of Nebula, gives a detailed insight into the life and mind of Todd Beaupré, the guy who’s in charge of the YouTube algorithm. What’s fascinating to see is his winding path of years in the tech industry and that no matter how you feel about the algorithm, the priority is still to create the best experience for the viewer.
That’s not always easy but it showed me that the people working on it are doing everything with the best intentions.

Ever heard of Danni Connor?

This title + thumbnail combo led me down a path to watching almost an hour of content about her passion for photography, squirrels and nature. It is the perfect comfort content when you just want to lean back and feel good and it gave me a little escape to northern Sweden. That let me experience the struggles and joys of capturing the most adorable squirrel pictures for an annual calendar, with no retention editing in sight.

If you’re for some chill content I can highly recommend.
