How I'll make content creation fun again

What game night taught me about expectations

Hi Friend 👋

I’m back at my desk after a three week vacation where I had time to reflect on the bigger of being a creator. Honestly while breaks like this are essential, it’s been much harder to unplug this year than in previous years.

It took me about a week to stop checking notifications, another to actually forget about all the creator things and only in the third week did I turn creator mode off.
Just in time to start it back up.

I hope the questions I shared with you during that time sparked some reflection in your own journey, too.

Now let’s start 2025 with a mindset shift that came from taking a break.

Play to Play

Over the holidays, we often gather around the table to play games. This year was no different—after dinner, someone pulled out the dominoes for a round of Mexican Train. A game with only one winner.

In the past, I dreaded these games. Losing made me feel awful, and even winning wasn’t fun because it meant someone else had lost. It turned what should’ve been a lighthearted activity into a source of stress and anxiety.

But this year, something changed. Out of nowhere I approached the game with a new mindset. I wasn’t playing to win or avoid losing. I was just playing. Focusing on the hand I was dealt, making the best moves I could, and letting go of the outcome. Making every single round enjoyable and even winning quite a few of them, effortlessly.

Like game night, creating videos can feel like a competition to win. With metrics as the scoreboard. But what if we could put fun first? What if we created for the joy of it, without tying our happiness to the numbers?

This year, I’m bringing that mindset shift to making videos online. Playing the game for the sake of playing. Spotting opportunities, trying new strategies, and enjoying the process. Instead of looking at uploads as wins and losses I'm simply going to play the game. Enjoying every move from myself and others. Collecting some wins along the way and definitely some L’s but either way, everyone can leave the table smiling, ready for the next challenge.

Have you ever experienced any kind of mindset shift like this or are you already a Zen Master at hitting publish? If this story resonates with you try observing your inner monologue at every day interactions like playing games and experiment with changing your approach to make it feel fun and effortless.
