Do you stand out in a crowd?
This week I started to plan the details for the first Orbit Creator Gathering while diving into the edit of the conversation with Wojtek, we filmed last week. Oh and fall finally arrived in Vienna. Making me realize how close the end of the year is.
From 3K to 300K in 30 days
Justin, a photographer, filmmaker, and full-time dad, achieve what many dream of - hitting the algorithm and growing an audience seemingly overnight. In just 30 days, he went from instagramer to influencer in the filmmaking and video editing niche. Having played a small part in this fast rise has been insightful and inspiring to the whole Orbit Community.
Until the beginning of this year Justin’s content has been a mix of enthusiastic gear reviews and heartfelt family moments. That was before he made a deal with himself to turn his passion into profit by focusing on short form content. His goal was to reach 10,000 followers within 30 days of uploading daily vertical videos on the three major platforms. With the hopes of getting brand deals to provide additional income for his family after relocating from the Philippines to Vienna, Austria.
To fuel this content engine consistently he needed a simple yet engaging content strategy. Which turned out to be simply to share tips on making more cinematic videos. Something that he’s been learn about for a few years. With this plan the first IG reel, in that time, got an instant 36,
000 views and that view count became the new normal up until his reel titled: 2 Slow Motion Moves broke 6 Million views. That’s when people started saying: “Justin is blowing up”. Which isn’t how he would describe it but it certainly looked like it from the outside.
Surprisingly it didn’t work on YouTube or Tiktok. Feel free to comment why you think that is. Energized by that algorithmic exposure he continued to publish daily now putting in more effort than ever before. Editing one reel for at least 6 hours. Which is what made him cross the 300,000 follower mark by day 30. Something you couldn’t script in a better way. With that he also did get brands attention and stared doing sponsored post. So the plan worked. At least for the time being because being a successful influencer is all about how many accounts you’ve reached in the last 30 days. So if your views go down so do your sponsorship opportunities.
The key lesson he share with me in a podcast conversation is to share what you know and think of others first. What can you give that helps someone else. Practicing radical generosity. As well as not being too precious about ideas and videos. If an idea is good it will find traction and if it’s bad if will float down the content stream. To see how he transform his living room into a Production Studio tune in on Monday.
Can you stand out in a crowd of 1 million?
CGP Grey released on of his rare videos to prove a point about statistics. I guess …?? If you are up for an interactive experience watch this short video to start playing a few rounds of Rock, Paper, Scissors against him. Statistically speaking one lucky winner will survive all rounds. Or will they …? Only one way to find out.
What is your Value Prop Extension?
This conversation between Ali Abdaal and Colin and Samir is the best interview I’ve seen with the creator duo. I do my best to maintain diversity in this newsletter and not feature creators too frequently but this section of the podcast is just too valuable to push down the line. While there are many insightful nuggets it’s at 01:49:23 that they talk about what makes a good creator product. How can you think about what is an extension of your content than makes a good sale to your audience.
If you are thinking about building a product watch this first. I promise it will help.
