Print Magazines, No Socials Marketing, What's a Niche

Next week you can catch me in Berlin and find out if I’m able to maintain consistent output despite traveling.

So far I’m a bit behind on the schedule but hard deadlines often make the impossible possible.

Go offline to succeed online.

Parker Floris, a 21 year old creative from Australia had some viral short form videos and his YouTube channel, with 793 subscribers, is a slightly random collection of videos that reflect his interests over time.

But a couple months ago he made a bold decision to stand out from everyone else making videos about the creator economy. Instead of doing more forgettable swipe content he sat down and made his very own print magazine.

By becoming his own publisher he didn’t just gain credibility that enables him to attend events across the globe but it’s also a medium that has much longer relevance and it can act as a bridge for an older generation to understand why Content Creators, like KSI, are the new Rock Stars.

But most importantly it serves as the ultimate business card. As he is moving from Australia to the UK it gives him something physical people can connect with and talk about. How many 20 something year old people do you know that put together a high gloss magazine?

GenZ is often talked about a generation that wants to put in minimal effort but committing to a giant project like this shows potential collaborators that Parker has the motivation and endurance to go the extra mile which puts him a huge step ahead of other photographers in the space.

How do you feel about physical product? Have you bought anything like this recently?

Personally I'd love to make an annual Orbit Magazine that goes beyond a 20 minute video.

Can You Sell Art Without Social Media?

While a lot of artist flock to Cara from Instagram Louise Stigell quit social media all together but still manages to have a thriving art business.

In this 35 minute marketing masterclass she walks you through her system step by step and explains her decisions that lead to this point.

We often feel the pressure to be on every single platform to reach the most people but we rarely think about the purpose of each of those places and how it contributes to our overall goals. Having a clear focus on the function of different outlets has become a vital key for creating with clarity and feeling comfortable with ignoring some of the “biggest” platforms out there.

The Tyranny Of Niches

This video with 190 views really caught my eye this morning. Edlundart collected his thoughts on niche, the YouTube algorithm and internet culture in this beautifully bizarre art video. Combining talking heads with street scenes is a fresh take on a classic format and I wouldn’t be surprised if the video has 100K+ views by the end of next week.

Choosing a niche is a headache for a lot of creators I talk with and videos like this show how silly the concept can be. What I discovered is that your niche is only “what” you make videos about but it says nothing about “how” or the emotional need you fulfill for the viewer.

In issue #6 I wrote a bit about the latter and it’s a concept I want to explore deeper.

Do you feel like picking a niche is mandatory or completely irrelevant?
